The largest pool in the world
Saturday, May 3rd, 2008The largest swimming pool in the world is more than 914 meters long, covers almost 90,000 meters squared, has a 35 meter deep end and holds 66 million gallons of water.
Yesterday the “Guinness Book of Records” said that the massive pool next to the sea in Chile was the biggest swimming pool in the world.
The swimming pool took five years to build, cost nearly £1billion ( 207 billion Japanese Yen ) and the annual maintenance cost will be £2million ( 414 million Japanese Yen ).
The swimming pool opened last month as is filled with filtered saltwater from the sea.
The man-made lagoon has attracted lots of people to the “San Alfonso del Mar” resort at Algarrobo, on Chile’s southern coast.
The water is so clear that you can see the bottom even in the very deep end.
It is much bigger than the world’s second biggest pool, the “Orthlieb” – in Morocco, which is only 137 meters long and 91 meters wide.
An Olympic size pool measures 45 meters by 22 meters.
This massive pool uses a computer to control the filter system. The filter uses fresh seawater from the ocean. It sucks the water in from one end and pumps it back out at the other end.
The sun warms the water to 26C which is nine degrees warmer than the sea.
The pool was designed by a Chilean man called Fernando Fischmann who is a biochemist . His company is called “Crystal Lagoons Corporation”.
They said that “As long as we have access to unlimited seawater, we can make it work, and it causes no damage to the ocean.”
